We had a bit of an environmental disaster this weekend. It looks like some careless boater has pumped a few gallons of diesel fuel overboard into the water. The diesel floats along the top surface of the water in a shiny oily sludge. This really does smell pretty strong (like paint thinner) and is pretty bad for the local wildlife. The marina has called in a hazmat team to skim the surface, and has also laid out dams to try to constrain the slick from floating away. At this point we have no idea where this diesel slick is coming from which means that the marina will most probably incur the costs to clean up, and eventually pass on that cost to us boaters.
The dams soaking up the oil/diesel has tinted red indicating the diesel is construction grade. There is quite a few condos being built in the neighborhood so perhaps a careless construction worker dumped excess fuel into the sewers leading to the lake.
